We will not take the presence of roots near or next to drains as proof of a root related damage.
Roots do not usually cause damage to a drain by lifting or girdling them. They will however exploit an already leaky drain and proliferate within them to cause a blockage.
Drains generally become faulty by other means, such as:
- failed collars/couplings
- old drain piping
- uneven settlement of soil around the drain
- ground movement/disturbance along the drain length
If you think a tree is damaging a drain, you should in the first instance contact your home insurance for advice before contacting the Council.
An insurance investigation will determine whether the homeowner/insurance company needs to arrange repairs.
We will not carry out work on trees to prevent roots entering damaged pipes, as repairing the pipe is the only certain solution.
The Council will review any information submitted to us and make an assessment where appropriate.
