If you think a tree is damaging your property, you should in the first instance contact your home insurance for advice before contacting the Council.
Direct Damage is where a tree grows and comes into direct contact with underground and aerial structures causing damage as a result.
Indirect Damage is where damage to larger structures for example buildings is caused through:
- Subsidence – changes in soil volume following moisture loss causing shrinkage and downward movement of the ground usually in clay soils.
- Heave – changes in soil volume following an increase in moisture causing expansion and upward movement of the ground usually in clay soils.
An insurance investigation will determine whether the homeowner/insurance company needs to arrange repairs.
The Council will review any information submitted and make an assessment. If it is proved that a council tree has damaged your property, or could cause damage in the future, we may carry out work on the tree subject to findings.
