Commemorative plaques including blue plaques are historical markers erected to commemorate the link between a location and a famous person, event, or former building.

Nationally, blue plaques date back to 1866 in London and were originally administered by the Society of Arts. They have been administered by English Heritage since 1986, whose scheme remains mainly focussed on London. Many other blue and commemorative plaque schemes are in operation elsewhere in the United Kingdom, which are all administered in different ways, such as by local authorities, civic societies, and residents’ associations.

From December 2023, Commemorative Plaques installed on premises owned by the City of Wolverhampton Council need to follow an application and approval process, by a panel, to include the input of Planning in the case of listed buildings, Assets Management, the Equalities team, the Senior Archivist, and representation from Friends of the Archives.

To place a nomination for a commemorative plaque, please complete the following form. The application will be tested against the pre-defined criteria before being considered by a panel for decision.

The criteria and current panel members can be found in the Download section.
