Guidance on what a FREE NHS Health Check is, if you're eligible and what to expect.

What is a NHS Health Check?

  • The FREE NHS Health Check is available to adults aged between 40 and 74 (without pre-existing conditions) once every five years.
  • It accesses your overall health and can help reduce your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, stroke, kidney disease, some cancers and dementia.

What to expect?

  • It takes about 30 minutes and is delivered by Health Care Professionals in your GP Practice.
  • You will receive a blood test to check your cholesterol and glucose levels.
  • Questions include current lifestyle choices around smoking, alcohol, diet, physical activity and family history.
  • Results will be communicated to you with personalised advice to improve your health and reduce your risk of developing serious conditions.

Am I eligible?

  • The check is available to adults aged between 40 and 74 without pre-existing conditions. For more information please visit NHS Health Check(link is external).
  • If eligible, you will receive an invitation from your GP practice in due course.  
  • If you think your check may be overdue, please contact your GP practice.
