Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce that the Coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday 6th May, 2023.

The Coronation Ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort.

The Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.

Poetry Competition

'We Have One Chance' - A Poem about the Environment

The Mayor, in partnership with Wolverhampton Libraries, invites you to create a poem in the celebration of the King’s coronation in May.

We know King Charles III is a passionate advocate of the planet. The City Of Wolverhampton would like to celebrate HRH Coronation with a poetry competition to inspire all ages.

Age categories:

  • under 7's
  • 7-11
  • 12-15
  • 16+

Key dates:

  • Competition opens: 20th March
  • Competition closes: 5th April
  • Voting opens 7th-10th April

Finalists are invited to perform their poems to a panel for the overall winner of each category. All finalists will be invited to tea with the mayor and receive a copy of the published anthology.

Kings Charles III Coronation Afternoon Tea with the Mayor of Wolverhampton

An afternoon tea with the mayor celebrating the Kings coronation.

Join us at Wolverhampton Art Gallery to celebrate the King’s coronation with afternoon tea. Visitors who attend will be able to enjoy a number of activities on the day, which include:

  • A tour of the gallery
  • Afternoon tea with the mayor including a glass of Prosecco (125ml) or non-alcoholic wine
  • A performance of music on our grand piano
  • A talk about the history of the coronation with information on coronations past and King Charles III by the master of ceremonies
  • A recital of a specially commissioned poem for the coronation by the city’s poet laureate Dr Kuli Kohli
  • An address by the mayor

Afternoon tea will include an assortment of miniature fancies, cakes, chocolate dipped fruit, and delicate finger sandwiches, served on our elegant cakes stands with a pot of loose leaf tea, coffee, Prosecco or non-alcoholic wine.

The Kings Charles III Coronation Children’s Party

To celebrate King Charles III coronation join us at Bantock.

Little ones can get involved and be a King or Queen for the day. Activities include:

  • A disco and party games
  • Coronation themed lunch for all children
  • Dress as royalty fancy dress competition (Prize is a voucher for a family ticket for the Micro World Exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery)
  • Crown making art activity

All dietary requirements catered for, please give details when booking.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Aimed at children aged 4 – 9 but all ages are welcome. The craft activities are not suitable for under 3’s due to small parts.

A coronation themed afternoon tea in the Dining Room and Drawing Room at Bantock House Museum.

Commemorate the coronation of King Charles III with a celebratory, coronation themed afternoon tea served in the beautiful Edwardian dining room and drawing room at Bantock House Museum on Monday 8 May from 11:30am until 1pm or 1:30pm until 3pm. Presented on our beautiful cake stands and including a range of delicate sandwiches, handmade cakes, scones and fancies all served with a pot of tea or coffee.

Photographer Competition

Calling all young photographers in Wolverhampton!

Wolverhampton Art Gallery are searching for up-and-coming photographers in the city to take part in the Wolverhampton Coronation Photographer Competition 2023. 

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, Wolverhampton Art Gallery want to showcase the many amazing young photographers of the city with a new competition that will showcase their skills and creativity. We are asking young photographers to capture images of people in their hometown – recreating photos that were submitted for a photograph competition in 1953 celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the people of Wolverhampton.

Winners will receive a family ticket to visit the summer exhibition, Microworld at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, and the selected photos of finalists will be displayed in the Making Space Gallery at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from Monday 12 June until Sunday 23 July.

Categories for entries are as follows for young people who live, work or are educated in a WV postcode:

  • Photographers up to age 11
  • Photographers aged 11 to 16
  • Photographers aged 16 to 25
  • Photographers who have SEND aged up to 25

Entries are open from Monday 27 March and should be submitted digitally to artsheritagelearning@wolverhampton.gov.uk by 5pm on Friday 26 May. Images should be submitted in jpeg format and be no more than 5mb. Two entry photos maximum per young person.

Entries can be submitted to recreate any of the selected photos.

The King’s Bunting

The Lord-Lieutenant is inviting schools, colleges, community groups and businesses to design sustainable bunting and showcase ‘The King’s Bunting’ in the week beginning 1st May.

To participate organisations need to simply register their organisation with the Lieutenancy either on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook with the hashtag #TheKingsBunting @WMLieutenancy or email office@wmlieutenancy.org

The bunting can be displayed in partnership with organisations or at a single location. We would like groups to put photos on social media of the bunting with the hashtag #TheKingsBunting @WMLieutenancy
