Around 500 children from 19 primary and special schools took part in the free vocal workshop, performing songs in a wide range of styles and traditions including, aptly, Singing In The Rain!
They also debuted a new song about Wolverhampton composed especially for the occasion by school staff and Paul Wilcox, vocal lead for Wolverhampton Music Education Hub.
The schools involved included Wodensfield Primary, Woden Primary, West Park Primary, Pennfields School, Goldthorn Park Primary, Bilston CE Primary, Woodfield Infants, St Stephen’s Primary, Warstones Primary, Parkfield Primary, St Anthony’s Primary, Nishkam Primary, Penn Hall School, Rakegate Primary, Westcroft School, Fallings Park Primary, Perry Hall Primary, Oak Meadow Primary and Stow Heath Primary.
The performance marked the culmination of a 6 month project run by Wolverhampton Music Service. Teachers have taken part in regular workshops at the Music Service where they learned songs which they could subsequently teach in their own schools.
Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Music is an important part of a young person's education, and our Music Service provides quality teaching for children and young people across Wolverhampton. This was an excellent opportunity for the pupils to show off their talents, and they didn't disappoint!”
