It is holding a special festive gift drive – and is encouraging members and visitors to support it if they possibly can.
Each of the City of Wolverhampton Council's 3 WV Active leisure centres - WV Active Aldersley, WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams and WV Active Central - has its own Giving Tree, adorned with tags representing gifts that will be given to residents in local care homes.
People are being asked to select a tag, purchase the requested item or donate a similar gift, and bring their wrapped gift back to WV Active with the tag attached by this Sunday (22 December). The gifts will then be distributed to care homes before Christmas Day.
The appeal has been developed by WV Active Sales and Service Managers Lisa Johnson and James Hayes, supported by Active Ageing Coordinator Jessica Savage, who works with care homes across the city.
Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Adults and Wellbeing, said: "It's very sad to think that people may be spending this Christmas alone in a care home. They may not have family and friends who are able to visit them and so won’t have any gifts to open on Christmas Day.
"The team at WV Active want to make sure this isn't the case, and so have launched their Giving Tree appeal.
"The gifts that the team have suggested are affordable and available from most retailers so, if you possibly can, please take a tag from one of the trees, purchase, wrap and return your gift, and the team will deliver them to local care homes in time for the big day.
“We’ve had a really good response and I’d like to thank all who have donated so far, but there’s still time to support the appeal if you haven’t already.
“We know things are hard for many of our residents at the moment, but if you can get involved, your generosity will help brighten someone’s Christmas and remind them that people are thinking of them this festive season."
