The gym will close after the last session on Monday (14 November) evening to allow the extensive work to take place. The new look facility is due to reopen in January.
The refurbishment will see the gym made larger and kitted out with brand new high quality fitness equipment, lighting, flooring and sound system.
Currently the gym has 19 workout stations which will be increased to 24 once the refurbishment is completed.
The update is part of an on-going transformation of the WV Active offer, with the changing rooms and reception area at the city-centre site already benefitting from a recent revamp.
Lisa Taylor, Head of Service Improvement at City of Wolverhampton Council said: "The gym at WV Active Central will be modernised and refurbished to a high standard to provide our customers with excellent facilities.
"We've prioritised this work based on customer feedback; once completed, the gym at WV Active Central will be bigger and have more equipment of a higher quality, taking it up to the same high standard as our other leisure centres.
"We'd like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused during this time and I am sure they will agree that it is worth the wait."
A pop up gym with reduced facilities at WV Active Central will be available from Wednesday November 16; alternatively, customers are advised to use the facilities at WV Active's Aldersley and Bilston sites while the work is taking place.
