A series of leaks from the roof over the last few years have caused significant damage to the building and to gym equipment. A survey subsequently identified serious defects meaning the roof itself needs to be completely replaced.
The work at the hub in Bromley Street, Blakenhall, is expected to get underway in the next few weeks and take around 3 months to complete. Because of the scale of the works, it will be necessary for the centre to remain closed to customers and staff during this time.
Councillor Stephen Simkins, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: "The Bob Jones Community Hub is an integral part of the local community and it is important that we take these steps now to ensure it can continue to welcome visitors for many years to come.
"While this work is being carried out, we will support organisations which use the centre to try and find a temporary alternative base for their activities and we will be in touch with them to discuss this further. In addition, if you purchase credits to use the gym at the Bob Jones Community Hub, these will be extended if they are due to expire.
“Library customers can use the We Select, You Collect service currently operating at Central, Wednesfield, Bilston and Warstones libraries to reserve specific titles.
“This is a necessary investment in this facility and I look forward to the work being completed as soon as possible so that the Bob Jones Community Hub is able to welcome back customers in a few months’ time.”
