People across Wolverhampton are being encouraged to don Denim for Dementia and raise vital funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

Schools, workplaces and families are being urged to wear items of denim during this year's Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from 15 to 21 May, 2016. The City of Wolverhampton Council is among those taking part, and will be asking staff to don denim on Wednesday 18 May in return for a donation to the Wolverhampton branch of the charity.

Anthony Ivko, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Service Director for Older People, said: "This is a very simple way that people can support Dementia Awareness Week and raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

"Anyone can take part - from workplaces and schools to families - and so we are urging everyone in Wolverhampton to raid their wardrobes, dig out the denim and make a donation to this very worthwhile cause."

Anyone who wishes to organise a Denim for Dementia fundraiser during Dementia Awareness Week is invited to contact Emma Dowler, Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser for the West Midlands, on 07809 321819 or via emma.dowler@alzheimers.org.uk for more information.

Emma said: "We would welcome any organisation supporting us during Dementia Awareness Week by wearing denim.

"We can supply organisers with collection boxes and posters to help promote their dress down days at their school or workplace - please get in touch for more information."

Members of Wolverhampton's Dementia Action Alliance have arranged a series of events and activities throughout Dementia Awareness Week, from information and advice sessions to a charity football match at Molineux Stadium, and are encouraging people who are worried that they, or someone close to them, may have the condition to find out more about the support available to them.

This year's Dementia Awareness Week will encourage people who are worried about dementia to confront their worries and contact the Alzheimer's Society for information and support either via the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 or by emailing helpline@alzheimers.org.uk.
