Wolverhampton councillors Sally Green and Chris Burden have been shortlisted in the 2024 LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) and CCLA annual Cllr Awards, in the Community Champion and Young Councillor of the Year categories respectively.

Competition was extremely tight with more than 350 nominations received nationally across 5 categories that celebrate the wide ranging work of councillors. The winners will be announced at the Guildhall in London on Wednesday 20 November.

Judges said Councillor Green's exceptional commitment to the community shone through in her nomination. Her initiatives, particularly on sustainability, have had a transformative impact.

Meanwhile, Councillor Burden’s nomination cited his understanding of the community he serves. He has championed education for all ages, especially for young people in care or with disabilities.

Councillor Stephen Simkins, Leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “The LGIU Councillor Awards are the only national ceremony to celebrate and showcase the work of individual councillors.

"Being shortlisted is an exceptional achievement, and I am pleased that the hard work of Sally and Chris for their constituents has been recognised in this way."

Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of the LGIU, added: "The judging panel was blown away by the number of extremely high quality nominations this year, with councillors up and down the country going the extra mile for residents.

"The shortlist for the 2024 Cllr Awards represents some of the most devoted elected representatives in England, Wales and Scotland. With councils working under enormous pressure, these Awards are a hugely important way to champion what councillors achieve for the places we live.

"Congratulations to all the councillors nominated and shortlisted and I look forward to announcing the winners.”
