The City of Wolverhampton Council hosted a special conference to help young people leaving care on their journey into adulthood.

The Care Leavers Youth Conference at Molineux Stadium last week (Tuesday 16 July, 2024), aimed to inspire and empower young care leavers as they prepare to live independently.

It covered a range of issues, informing young care leavers about how to maintain and manage a tenancy, highlighting the different types of help and support that is available to care leavers, and sharing case studies of other young care leavers who have successfully made the transition to independent living.

Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "As a council, we work hard to ensure our young people leaving care are fully supported to make sure that their first steps towards independence are the best they can be.

"This conference was an important opportunity for young people leaving care to find out more about the transition into adulthood, to create new friendships with other care leavers and, most importantly, to make them feel more confident to continue their journey to independence."

Wolverhampton's Local Offer for care leavers aged between 16 and 25 provides information about a wide range of services which could help young care leavers prepare for adult life.

It includes details of support which they are entitled to by law, as well as additional services that the council has been able to secure with the help of partner organisations. For more information, please visit Wolverhampton Children in Care.
