Improvement works along Dudley Street have been successfully completed, giving a substantial boost to the city centre.

Repaving to improve the look and safety of the area was finished ahead of schedule, providing a significant upgrade of footways for pedestrians and delivery vehicles.

City of Wolverhampton Council appointed contractors Taylor Woodrow to carry out the repaving to ensure the area complements the city’s major public realm works.

A further £19 million of improvement works to Lichfield Street, Queen Square and Darlington Street will begin later this year, following a similar model to the Dudley Street scheme.

All the works are aimed at increasing footfall and spend, driving new opportunities for business led activity and growth, creating new events space, boosting activity to support a vibrant nighttime economy, supporting healthy and sustainable city living lifestyles, improving access to essential services, and stimulating wider private investment.

The Dudley Street repaving works started at the end of January and focussed on the area between Queen Street and Bilston Street.

Footways and carriageways were repaved with new and improved materials, and re-kerbing around trees was carried out to allow room for growth.

Access to all shops and businesses was maintained throughout the works, with additional arrangements in place to support deliveries to businesses.

Improvement works took place in small sections on a rolling basis so access to frontages was not affected. Trading continued as normal for Dudley Street market and street traders.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for transport and green city, said: “I am extremely pleased to see the completion of the repaving works for Dudley Street.

“This is one of our prime retail areas, which sees the highest footfall in the city, and it was important that we upgraded it to offer a comfortable and safe shopping environment for our residents and visitors.

“I’m very happy to say that the repaving works caused minimal disruption and, despite the heavy rain we have experienced this year, they were completed 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

“As with all our public realm improvements, the completed works along Dudley Street will ensure people enjoy our city centre from the moment they arrive.”
