Repaving and resurfacing will take place in Princess Street, Market Street and Garrick Street.
Traffic signals will be upgraded at the junction of Market Street and Bilston Street and the junction of Garrick Street and Snow Hill.
Four new bus shelters will be installed in Bilston Street and the city council will be working with Centro to replace 8 other city centre bus stops. Work will begin at the end of February and be completed by September.
Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity Councillor Peter Bilson said: "The city centre improvements play an important part the wider multi million pound regeneration of Wolverhampton.
"We want to ensure that this city continues to be an attractive place to live, visit and work. Enhancing the city centre means we can attract more investment, retain the businesses we have and create more jobs.
"This scheme is helping to improve pedestrian access between the city centre and the Interchange area and also reduce the number of vehicles in our main shopping areas.
"While work is carried out we will need to put temporary road closures in place and would like to thank people and businesses for bearing with us during this time.
"We have notified businesses to explain the works in detail and reiterate that improvements will support the city centre's vibrancy in the future."
While the resurfacing work takes place, out of hours temporary road closures will be needed in Market Street and Garrick Street. These will be advertised and businesses informed well in advance of the works.
Princess Street will be completely closed to all vehicles between Queen Street and King Street to allow the improvements to take place. This is necessary to get this part of the scheme completed as soon as possible - keeping it open to vehicles would mean disruption to businesses in that stretch for twice as long.
The temporary closure will take place between 2 March and the end of June. During this period, the direction of one way traffic will be temporarily reversed along the pedestrianised section of Queen Street, King Street and part of Dudley Street. People will be able to access to businesses and properties at all times.
