Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “We are fortunate in Wolverhampton to have so many dedicated foster parents who combine a desire to help children with a commitment to providing the best possible care.
“Fostering can truly be a life changing experience, both for foster parents and the child or young person they care for. We'd love to hear from people who have both a spare room and of course love in their heart to help local children by fostering.”
There is no such thing as a typical fostering situation, just as there is no typical child. Foster parents are from a variety of backgrounds, with different experiences and skills. We know that there are lots of myths about who can foster, but you don’t need to be married or have children of your own or own your own home. What is important is that you can provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home for children and young people. We also always try to keep our children and young people local, to keep them close to the places and people that they know.
Fostering is a unique role, with no two days being the same. It isn’t always easy but is highly rewarding and can be truly life changing. Also, as a foster parent for Fostering For Wolverhampton, you won’t be alone, we provide strong support to our foster parents as well as an excellent training and development programme to help build on our foster parents knowledge and skills.
Supervising social workers provide intensive support for the first 6 weeks of a new foster care arrangement and then every month thereafter, while foster parents can get help through other foster parents in our fostering community.
Foster care can range from a few days to a number of years, and foster parents receive a regular, tax exempt fee and allowance to cover the cost of caring for a child.
