Wolverhampton was chosen by the Department of Health and Social Care and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities to pilot the Better Health: Rewards scheme, designed to see whether offering adults rewards and incentives will help them to eat better and increase their physical activity levels.
Everyone who has now signed up has secured their place and can earn at least £40 worth of rewards by making healthier choices.
App users must now complete all activities in their 'to do' list by 27 April to get access to their rewards and personalised health challenges; this includes wearing their fitness tracker and syncing it to the app every day for 5 days and completing some food surveys. Users who do not complete their to do list before this date will lose access to the app.
John Denley, Wolverhampton's Director of Public Health, said: "We have been blown away by the response to the Better Health: Rewards pilot here in Wolverhampton, with well over 28,000 residents signing up.
"Many of you are already completing challenges, earning rewards and spending them in different ways, and if you've just signed up, welcome to the programme!
"Over the next 20 weeks you will be able to take part in a range of activities that will give you the chance to collect points for making simple lifestyle changes.
"Once you've completed your to do list, the first £10 worth of rewards will be unlocked and the app will begin generating weekly personalised challenges for you to choose from, through which you will be able to earn more points.
"Please also remember that when you do any sort of physical activity you need to put the tracker in exercise mode so that it can capture your workout. And don’t forget to continue syncing your fitness tracker on a regular basis, ideally every day, so that you can complete your challenges.”
The Better Health: Rewards scheme has thousands of rewards on offer, including money off food shopping, to cinema tickets, gym passes and discounts on days out.
