Asbestos

The cost of asbestos removal is £77 for up to 10 bags. It is free when on maximum housing and/or council tax benefits (restricted to one collection in a 6 week period). Asbestos is collected when multiple requests are made to the council, therefore timescales may vary.

If you have removed asbestos from your home yourself then you can purchase specialist asbestos bags from the council who will collect and transfer the waste to a designated and licensed disposal facility.

We only collect the following types of asbestos:

  • bath panels
  • ironing board heat shields
  • airing cupboard or gas meter insulation panels
  •  asbestos panels or corrugated roofing sheets from garages and sheds
  • external drain pipes and guttering

For safety, it is important to thoroughly read the guidance booklet provided with the bags before removing any asbestos waste - pdf icon Asbestos guidance booklet [64kb]

The asbestos must be double bagged and completely sealed with no gaps to prevent the risk of fibres escaping. The packaged asbestos waste must be a suitable weight and size for the collection staff to be able to lift. Please note we do not collect asbestos produced from work carried out by a trader. In these instances it is the legal responsibility of the trader to remove the waste.

Further advice on working with asbestos safely can be read on the Health and Safety Executive website or by calling 0845 345 0055.
