Keeping your home

If you have a tenancy when you go to prison you may be able to maintain it to return to when you are released. Tell your landlord that you will be in prison or ask family or friends to talk to your landlord on your behalf while you are in prison.

It is important to try to continue to pay your rent or mortgage payments while you are in prison or you could face eviction or repossession.

Most prisons have a resettlement service and they can draw up a resettlement plan for you when you enter prison and review it again before you leave.

It is important that you tell your resettlement worker about your housing situation and whether you think you may have problems with rent or mortgage payments whilst you are in prison.

For more information about benefits that you may be entitled to while in prison to help you keep your home, visit Shelter’s webpage on keeping your home when in prison.

Probation

If you are released on probation, you should be allocated a Probation Officer. Your Resettlement Worker and Probation Officer should work together to ensure that you have an accommodation plan in place.

If you apply to Wolverhampton Homes for housing assistance, they will need to take information on your circumstances to find out whether you are legally eligible for accommodation. The duty owed to you may be limited to advice and assistance.

If you have read all of the above, but still require support or advice, please contact Wolverhampton Homes Homeless Services on 01902 556789 (option 2), or by using the online form. Wolverhampton Homes provide homeless services on behalf of the City of Wolverhampton Council.
