Certificates were presented to many of the 21 newly qualified social workers by Wolverhampton Mayor Councillor Barry Findlay at the event in the Mayor's Parlour just before Christmas.

He said: "Events like these are important in celebrating the efforts of our employees, and the commitment of the council to the development of its workforce.

"This is the second time that social workers have received certificates for completing their Assessed and Supported Year with us.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on their achievements, and wish them well in their future careers with the council."

Principal Social Worker Louise Haughton added: "The Assessed and Supported Year helps newly qualified social workers develop their skills, knowledge and capability and strengthen their professional confidence. It provides them with access to regular and focused support during their first year of employment.

"I, along with Heads of Service, have had the opportunity to read and pass many Assessed and Supported Year portfolios this year.

"The standards and quality of social work practice has been extremely high with many newly qualified social workers receiving recognitions of good practice. I would like to congratulate all of those who have successfully completed their Assessed and Supported Year."

The successful participants included Jane Land, Hardeep Sandhu, Marva Cunningham, Joanne Sailsman, Mariam Ahmed, Christene Harrison, Katrina Beaumont, Dawn Hill, Chris Gombedza, Keysha Cespedes, Gemma Corbett-Elsmore, Charmayne Devall, Javan Jarratt, Georgia May, Tammy Barnes, Colleen Cullum and Diane Gough from the Child in Need Child Protection Team.

Also receiving certificates were Sonia Lewis, Danielle Heath, Lynn Green and Lucy Montague from the Looked After Children's Teams, Santokh Sund from the Disabled Children and Young People's Team and Ravjeet Bachra and Tina Allen from Adults Services.

The programme is co-ordinated by the council's Workforce Development Team and funded by the Department of Education and Department of Health.
