To become an open market trader in Wolverhampton, Bilston and Wednesfield you will need to apply for a licence.

Do I need a licence?

To operate a market stall, you will need a licence from us. You will require a casual licence and have previously stood at the market on two previous occasions before coming a licenced trader. We will require further information if your wish to trade on the indoor market once we have received your application. Please complete the application process below.

How will my application be determined?

We will determine your application based upon:

  • trading history
  • product lines to be carried
  • availability of market stalls 

How do I apply?

You can apply for a licence using the application in the downloads section and returning it to the details stated. Also in the downloads section, you will find information on how to complete your application.

Do I need to provide further information or evidence?

If you are applying for an indoor market licence, we will require evidence of:

  • 2 forms of identification (one being a utility bill)
  • evidence of public liability insurance (minimum of £5million)

For an open market licence, we require evidence of public liability insurance (minimum of £5million).

How long will it take you to process my application?

We will acknowledge receipt of your application within 5 working days.

We will aim to process your application and tell you the outcome within approximately 14 working days.

If you do not supply the correct information, documents or fee, your application will be rejected.

Will tacit consent apply?

No, tacit consent will not apply. This is because it is in the public interest as per our market charter that we must process your application before it can be granted.

Will my premises be inspected or assessed?

Yes. Your market stall will be regularly checked each day to ensure you are complying with market and trading regulations.

If my application is refused, how do I appeal?

If your application is unsuccessful, contact us and we will discuss your application with you.

Can I view a public register of licences online?

No. If you wish to inspect the public register of licences, contact us.
