Our Health and Safety Service Plan

The Health and Safety Service Plan is an expression of this Councils commitment to Health and Safety Enforcement and is a requirement of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as the body that monitors, audits, and broadly sets Councils’ activities on health and safety enforcement.

This Service Plan  tells you how we will regulate health and safety throughout the City by a combination of measures, which include enforcing health and safety law and producing advice and guidance to help support businesses comply with health and safety legislation. The plan outlines the priorities, targets, and resources allocated to health and safety for the year. It also highlights the authorities performance and key achievements in relation to health and safety  for 2021 – 2022.

The plan should help in service management, performance planning as well as assisting in comparing performance against other local authorities.

The service will prioritise their work based on the national priorities set by the HSE, with the key objective to focus on the safety of the workforce and protect them from work related ill health.

Our Food Service Plan

All councils have to produce an annual Food Safety Service Plan, which outlines what we are doing to ensure food safety.

This Service Plan has been produced in response to the Food Standard Agency's framework agreement on food law enforcement. It tells you how we will protect and promote food safety throughout the City by a combination of measures, which include enforcing food safety law, sampling of foods and liaising with other organisations. The plan outlines the priorities, targets, and resources allocated to food safety for the year. It also highlights the authorities performance and key achievements in relation to food safety for 2021 – 2022.

The plan should help in service management, performance planning as well as assisting in comparing performance against other local authorities.

Each year we inspect a percentage of the food premises (in accordance with a national risk based inspection plan) in the area to make sure they are run hygienically and selling food which is safe to eat.

The Food Standards Agency's Food Law Code of Practice allows a number of different interventions to be used instead of inspections. This allows a risk-based approach to be taken. The Service puts a lot of effort into ensuring that businesses achieve a good standard of food safety and uses a range of tools to ensure that this is case. This includes an in-house consultancy service; Trade with Confidence, which businesses can access to receive bespoke advice.
